Third-grade sight words are longer and include silent letters and vowel teams. Children read them slowly in sentences.
Silent letters
'Kind' has a long i without silent e. Children read it as 'kin' if they use short i.
Draw and the aw
'Draw' uses aw, a vowel pair. Children who haven't learned it read /a/ /w/.
Reading in sentences
Third graders read longer sentences. A slow sight word breaks the flow of meaning.
